Canon bot für das FD-System eine große Auswahl an Standardzoomobjektiven an, welche die Brennweite 50mm enthalten. Darunter befanden sich Objektive, die ausschließlich den Weitwinkelbereich von 28 bis zur Normalbrennweite 50 (55)mm abdeckten oder aber erst bei 50mm starteten und bis zur Brennweite von 135mm reichten, sowie klassische Standardzooms von 35-70mm, 35-105mm oder aber 28-85mm. Objektive dieser Brennweitenbereiche gab es zumeist in verschiedenen Ausführungen. Diese unterschieden sich, neben der Anfangsbrennweite oder dermechanischen Qualität ebenso in ihrer optischen Leistung. Beispielsweise hatte Canon ein nFD 3.5/35-105mm - ein überragendes Objektiv -, aber auch ein einfacheres nFD 3.5-4.5/35-05mm im Portfolio.
Das hier vorgestellte Canon nFD 4.0/35-70mm brachte Canon 1979 auf den Markt. Es ist ein kleineres Standardzoomobjektiv, welches den Brennweitenbereich um die Normalbrennweite abdeckt. Die konstante Anfangsbrennweite von 4.0 ist sein Vorteil gegenüber dem Nachfolger, dem Canon nFD 3.5-4.5/35-70mm.

Canon offered a wide range of standard zoom lenses for the FD system, which included the focal length 50mm.
Among them were lenses that exclusively covered the wide-angle range from 28 to the standard focal length of 50 (55)mm or that started at 50mm and went up to a focal length of 135mm, as well as classic standard zooms of 35-70mm, 35-105mm or 28-85mm. Lenses in these focal length ranges were usually available in different versions. These differed, apart from the initial focal length or the mechanical quality, also in their optical performance.
For example, Canon had an nFD 3.5/35-105mm - a superior lens - but also a simpler nFD 3.5-4.5/35-05mm in its portfolio.
The Canon nFD 4.0/35-70mm presented here was launched by Canon in 1979. It is a smaller standard zoom lens covering the focal length range around the normal focal length. The constant initial focal length of 4.0 is its advantage over its successor, the Canon nFD 3.5-4.5/35-70mm.
